Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has announced an increase in the recommended retail price (RRP) of the PlayStation 5 (PS5) in select markets, including Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Effective April 14, 2025, the price adjustments primarily affect the PS5 Digital Edition, while the standard model with the Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive remains unchanged in some regions.
In Europe, the PS5 Digital Edition's price has risen to €499.99. In the United Kingdom, it now costs £429.99. Australian consumers will see the Digital Edition priced at AUD $749.95 and the standard model at AUD $829.95. In New Zealand, the Digital Edition is set at NZD $859.95, with the standard model at NZD $949.95. The PS5 Pro's pricing remains unaffected by these changes.
SIE attributes these price hikes to the challenging global economic environment, citing high inflation rates and fluctuating exchange rates as key factors influencing the decision. Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President of Global Marketing at SIE, emphasized that these adjustments are necessary to address the economic pressures impacting the company's operations.
In a move to provide some relief to consumers, Sony has reduced the price of the Disc Drive for the PS5. The new RRPs are €79.99 in Europe, £69.99 in the UK, AUD $124.95 in Australia, and NZD $139.95 in New Zealand. This price reduction offers flexibility for Digital Edition owners who may wish to add physical media capabilities to their consoles.
The United States market is notably exempt from these price increases. Analysts suggest that this decision may be influenced by recent U.S. trade policies, including tariffs on Japanese electronics, which have affected global supply chains and prompted companies like Sony to adjust pricing strategies in other regions.
Sony's latest pricing strategy reflects the broader challenges facing the tech industry, as companies navigate economic volatility and supply chain disruptions. By adjusting prices in select markets and offering cost reductions on accessories, Sony aims to balance operational sustainability with consumer accessibility.
