Eight years after launching the enormously successful hybrid platform, the Switch, Nintendo is releasing a sequel in just a few months. Following the unveiling of the Switch 2 earlier this year, Nintendo held its second Direct display, which included a deeper look at the new device as well as information about its launch plans.

The Switch 2 has a 1080p resolution and an LCD screen that supports up to 120fps (with HDR capability). The base machine will have 256GB of internal storage, with higher read and write performance than the last console. When docked, the console can output 4K HDR to compatible displays while playing supported titles. A fan will be installed on the dock to keep the Switch 2 cool while playing games with higher power levels.

The company claims that the controllers would provide a more comfortable experience with larger buttons and control sticks. Mouse controls are also confirmed, allowing Joy-Cons to be used on a flat surface for navigation and, presumably, in subsequent games. The Joy-Cons are now magnetically linked to the console.

The much-anticipated new C button on the right Joy-Con turned out to be a communications button, allowing users to easily check in on their friends via a chat and streaming window. The Game Chat function works in both docked and handheld modes, and a microphone is now located on top of the console. A dedicated Switch 2 camera will be released alongside the console for use in group video chats with gaming Chat and other gaming features.

A new Switch 2 Pro Controller will also be available soon, featuring an audio connector and its own C button for full compatibility with the new system.

In terms of returning features, the Switch 2 retains the company's hybrid approach to consoles, allowing for portable and docked TV play. Backward compatibility for last-generation Switch games has been confirmed. However, the Switch 2 will only support microSD Express, not normal microSD cards.

Nintendo will charge for Upgrade Packs that upgrade Switch games for the Switch 2, with first-party titles such as Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom already confirmed for the program. Pricing has not been revealed yet.

Third-party publishers have already confirmed games for the system, including Cyberpunk 2077, Hogwarts Legacy, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4, Hitman World of Assassination, Split Fiction, Street Fighter 6, Elden Ring, Hades 2, and many more.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to be released worldwide on June 5. The standard edition costs $449.99.
