In September 2024, OpenAI introduced the o1 family of AI models, which are supposed to spend more time thinking before responding. These models reason through challenging tasks and tackle more difficult problems than other top AI models in science, coding, and math. ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team account holders have had access to the o1 series models for some months.

In October 2024, Microsoft introduced Think Deeper, a new Copilot Labs feature for Copilot Pro users. This tool employs OpenAI's o1 reasoning models to assist users in solving difficult challenges.

Microsoft stated today that the Think Deeper functionality will be free for all Copilot users. This means that OpenAI's o1 reasoning models are now free, which is a fantastic deal for interested consumers. The Think Deeper feature will take longer to respond than standard Copilot questions. However, it can provide extensive, step-by-step responses to difficult topics.

Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman stated the following about the launch of the Think Deeper functionality for Copilot users:

The possible uses here are really infinite. I'm genuinely so excited that our tens of millions of users are all getting this opportunity. We've got so much more in the pipeline right now that I can't wait to tell you about. But in the meantime, life is full of chaos and complex problems. Let Think Deeper shoulder some of the mental load!

To use the new 'Think Deeper' functionality, customers should go to the Copilot website or mobile app and click the 'Think Deeper' button in the query bar before typing their question. In around 30 seconds, users will receive a thorough response. This development is a huge step towards making advanced AI capabilities more accessible and useful to a larger audience.
