OpenAI's CEO unveils his vision of a better world with AI

Sam Altman, OpenAI's current CEO and one of its initial co-founders, has long expressed his views on how artificial intelligence may impact the world. Altman posted a rare post on his personal blog, describing a future with AI that "is going to be so bright that no one can do it justice by trying to write about it now".

In his essay, Altman claims that the goal of an AI computer achieving "superintelligence," which has been described as AI becoming more intelligent than humans, might occur "in a few thousand days." He adds that hitting that milestone may take longer, but he is "confident we'll get there."

So, what is the future of the AI-powered world? According to Altman, people will have AI helpers that can do considerably more than they can now accomplish:

AI models will soon serve as autonomous personal assistants who carry out specific tasks on our behalf like coordinating medical care on your behalf. At some point further down the road, AI systems are going to get so good that they help us make better next-generation systems and make scientific progress across the board.

Altman admits that "there are a lot of details" that must be solved before any of this AI-powered future can occur. One potential barrier is the cost of electricity, as well as the expense of developing processors and infrastructure to power these AI helpers. Altman wrote:

If we don’t build enough infrastructure, AI will be a very limited resource that wars get fought over and that becomes mostly a tool for rich people.

Altman also predicts that the rise of AI will cause "significant changes in labor markets," but he does not believe that "we'll run out of things to do."
